History of Christian Hospital Chhatarpur

For nearly a century, Christian Hospital Chhatarpur has been a beacon of hope and healing in the heart of Chhatarpur, India. Our rich history is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare, nurturing a legacy of compassion, and serving the community with dedication.

Christian Hospital, located in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh operates as a 120–bed facility, serving a crucial role in the Bhundhelkahnd region, one of the most backward regions in India. The hospital’s roots trace back to 1925, established by Ms. Delia Fistler and Ms. Esther Baird of the Friends Foreign Missionary Society at the invitation of the Maharaja of Chhatarpur. What began as an outpatient clinic evolved into a fully-fledged hospital with inpatient services by 1930. Dr. Ruth Hull, a medical doctor along with Ms. Alena Calkins, a qualified nurse, managed the hospital in the initial years. Later, Ms Alena Calkins founded the nursing training school to empower girls from impoverished backgrounds.

In 1974, the hospital became a part of the Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA), expanding its services as a multispecialty facility. Today, it caters to the healthcare needs of populations from four districts across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, with a pronounced commitment to assisting the poor and marginalized.

For nearly a century, Christian Hospital Chhatarpur has been a beacon of hope and healing in the heart of Chhatarpur, India. Our rich history is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare, nurturing a legacy of compassion, and serving the community with dedication.

In 1930, the seeds of Christian Hospital Chhatarpur were sown when it was established as "THE ELIZABETH JANE BELL STEPHENSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL." This noble endeavour was made possible through the generosity of Catharine S. Stalker and Dr Jennie Stephenson. Catharine Stalker, a prominent board member of the Friends Foreign Missionary Society, played a pivotal role in sending out pioneering missionaries, Delia Fistler and Esther Baird, to Chhatarpur and Nowgoan.

On January 26, 1931, an auspicious ceremony marked the formal opening of the hospital, graced by Col. Tyrell, the British Government's physician for all of Bundelkhand. It initially operated as a women's and children's general hospital.

The hospital's early days saw dedicated individuals like Dr. Ruth Hull and Nurse Alena Calkins at the helm of medical care. Over time, the staff expanded to include Indian professionals, such as Dr. Grace Jones (Singh) and others, who tirelessly served patients with various medical needs, including medicine, obstetrics, surgeries, and paediatrics.

One of the hospital's noble objectives was to provide training opportunities for orphan girls. Alena Calkins initiated a nursing training school affiliated with the National Council of Churches'- Mid India Board of Examiners for mission nurses, now known as MIBE. In February 1949, Dr. Devol and Frances Devol arrived in Chhatarpur, taking up the challenging medical work at the hospital, which had by then become a bustling general hospital.

In 1957, Indian doctor Dr. Mategaonkar, a graduate of CMC Vellore, joined the hospital, increasing the bed capacity to 85. He served the community around 25 year through the hospital. After 26 years of dedicated service in India and Nepal, Dr. and Mrs. Devol returned to the USA in 1974.
